Pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP, is one of the most effective HIV prevention tools we have. Taken consistently, daily oral PrEP reduces the risk of sexually acquired HIV by about 99%.
What has changed is choice. Alongside daily oral options, long-acting injectable cabotegravir given every two months offers protection for people who struggle with daily dosing, and twice-yearly agents are moving through development.
This expansion matters here. Metro Atlanta and Georgia more broadly continue to see high HIV incidence, and access to prevention remains uneven across communities.
Every clinical encounter is a chance to ask about risk, offer testing, and start a conversation about which form of PrEP fits a patient's life. The best regimen is the one a patient will actually use.
